At a glance

Hello, Dolphins!

We had a great week kicking off the second half of the school year. I'd like to start with some great achievements and projects. The Art Department is excited to celebrate our student artists and their outstanding achievements in the Scholastic Art Awards.

First, we’d like to extend another big congratulations to Ana Clara Santos for winning a Gold Key Scholastic Art Award this year (in case you didn’t hear the news last Friday!). In addition, Ana Clara received an Honorable Mention for her Roots of Stories piece. We are also proud to recognize Atlas Torres, who earned both an Honorable Mention and a Silver Key for her art photography.

The Art Department would like to congratulate all of the students who received awards and honorable mentions, as well as those who submitted their work. There was an impressive amount of creative, high-quality artwork entered into this highly competitive national contest.
Congratulations to the following students for their awards and recognition:
  • Nayomi Abbott
  • Brooke Bigelow
  • Aeva DaBreo
  • Camie DePuy
  • Shelby Jones
  • Logan Joy
  • Cameron Mullen
  • Jenna Richard
  • Mikaela Samuels
Great job, everyone!

We are excited to share that Mr. Whinnem’s Broadcasting Technology class has published their documentary on D-Y’s Community Garden—a student-led, collaborative project that has become an important part of our school community. We are proud that the garden is woven into D-Y High School’s culture, supporting local labs and creating meaningful opportunities within our Career Pathways. This video does a wonderful job showcasing the process it took to fund and build the garden, as well as the teamwork behind it. Click here to view the video.

Thank you to Mr. Whinnem’s class and to all who helped make the Community Garden a reality.

Finally, a reminder that registration for spring sports is now open. The registration deadline is Friday, March 13th, and practices begin Monday, March 16th. To register for a spring sport, please visit FamilyID.

Have a great weekend and stay tuned for weather updates sent via ParentSquare and posted on our website.

Promoting Good Attendance All Winter Long

Dear Families,

Being at school every day helps students stay connected, confident and on track in their learning.

We understand snow, rain, and seasonal illnesses like colds, flu, fevers and earaches can sometimes make it harder to get to school.

While some absences are unavoidable, every missed day, including excused absences, interrupts the routine of learning and makes it harder for students to feel engaged and connected.

Here are some ways to keep your child healthy and in school this winter:

1. Develop back up plans for getting your student to school. If you can’t take them to school, see who else can give them a ride, or form a “walking school bus” to walk to school or the school bus stop with other families.
2. If your student gets sick or you are not sure whether to keep them home or send them to school, talk to your child’s medical provider or the school nurse for advice.
3. Look for signs of stress or anxiety. If you feel that anxiety or stress is playing a role, talk to your student’s teacher, the school nurse or counselor, or your medical provider about how best to support your child.
4. Promote healthy habits. Encourage hand washing, good sleep, healthy meals, daily exercise and plenty of fluids.
5. Prevent the spread of germs. Remind children not to share cups or utensils with others.
6. Dress your student for the cold weather. If you need help with coats, hats, or gloves, please call the school.
7. Stay connected if your student must be home. If illness keeps your child out for more than a day or two, contact your child’s teacher for learning materials so they don’t fall behind.

We know winter can be tough, but showing up matters.

Let us know how we can help you..
