Robert Haff, coach - Athletic Director. Bob had a 36-year career at D-Y beginning in the fall of 1973 in the Physical Education department. In 1981, he was named the athletic director. He served as an assistant coach in football, boys gymnastics, baseball, and ice hockey. He became head baseball coach in 1978, lasting for a 25-year tenure. Bob was inducted into the Massachusetts Baseball Coaches' Hall of Fame in 2000.
Jim Hoar, coach. Jim began his career in the fall of 1980 in the Special Education department. He served as the JV hockey coach before becoming the head coach of the girls' spring track team in 1981, and then the cross country team in the fall of 1981. For more than 45 years, the D-Y girls track and cross country teams have been the most dominant teams in Southeastern Massachusetts. The cross country teams have won 24 league championships; winter track has won 18; and the spring teams have won 33 titles.
Barry Merrill, 1976 graduate. Barry was a top runner on the cross country team, graduating with the course record, along with the indoor two-mile and outdoor two-mile records. He was a member of an elite group of runners who would win back-to-back All-State Championships in cross country. After one year at Southeastern Massachusetts University, he joined the Marines. He ran for the Corps throughout his service, receiving several citations for his performances as a runner, and as a top flight drill instructor.
Kristen Lyons (posthumously), 1984 graduate. A three-sport athlete, Kristen excelled on the field, court, and track. She was a two-time all-star in field hockey. In spring track, Kristin was a three-time SMC all-star. She was the team's top scorer all four years and team MVP her sophomore, junior, and senior years. Kristen graduated with several D-Y records, including the 400, 800, mile, and 400-meter team relay record. She still holds the Springfield College outdoor records in the 1,500 and 3,000 meters.
Melissa Sherman, 2001 graduate. Melissa excelled on the cross country course and track. Melissa amassed wins and set records on the cross country team, including the Class B cross country Championship as a junior and a third place at the All-State meet as a senior. She held an incredible six individual records and several relay team records for winter track upon graduation. In spring track, she was named Gatorade Circle of Champions for Massachusetts Track and Field as a freshman; three-repeated as Class B champion in the 800 as a freshman, sophomore, and junior; and won the Massachusetts and New England titles in the 800 meters as a junior. As a senior, she won the Class B championship in the mile, and was the D-Y girls' team all-time top scorer.
Jack Sherman, 2003 graduate. Jack was a league all-star in soccer, winter track, and spring track, amassing 11 varsity letters during his four years. He was the leading scorer for the soccer team for his sophomore, junior, and senior years. Jack won the State Divisional Championship in the 55m hurdles, and the State Pentathlon Championship as a senior. He graduated with the most points scored in a season and career, with records set in the 55m hurdles, long jump, 300m, and pentathlon. In spring track, he won the State Divisional Championship titles in the high jump and 300m hurdles, and the State Decathlon title. He was D-Y's team leading scorer in season and career.
Katie Sherman, 2005 graduate. Katie sprinted, jumped, hurdled, and raced to more All-State titles and New England championships than any athlete has ever achieved at D-Y. She was inducted into the Massachusetts State Coaches' Association Hall of Fame in 2019. Katie played soccer for four years, and was the league MVP sophomore and junior year. During winter and spring track, Katie won eight individual State and New England championships in various events, including the 55m hurdles, 100m hurdles, high jump, and 300m; and set national class records in the Pentathlon as a freshman, sophomore, and junior. She still holds the Massachusetts State Pentathlon record.
